Reflecting, Celebrating and Transitioning Out of Summer

By Karla Romero, City of La Quinta Finance Director/City Treasurer

Welcome to August 2020, when the final long daylight days of summer draw to a close, students anxiously prepare to return to school, most government finance professionals start working on year-end audits, and we may even start to imagine the winter holidays around the corner. But before we get too far ahead, let us take a moment to pause and appreciate the present.

Over the last few months, we have learned how to work remotely, communicate over multiple platforms, and express our ideas via video calls, kept up with email overload, juggled unforeseen financial hardships, and much more, especially if you include our personal lives. Even if we think we are doing a pretty good job, there is always something new to be learned, therefore, CSMFO news will continue to publish articles regarding these topics, other current events, and a new “Get to Know Your Leadership” series.

Get to Know Your Leadership

Each of us has special gifts to share with the world along with life lessons and moments that have shaped our lives. Starting this month, we will be highlighting CSMFO members by asking them a few questions about their careers, personal lives, and lessons learned along the way. We will share their words of wisdom and candid, sometimes comical, responses with you. We hope this series will inspire you to push through difficult times, develop lasting friendships with colleagues, and sometimes laugh as you imagine the person behind the words. As we reflect on the past let us not forget the present.

Typically, summer ends with it travel plans and hopefully a few new adventures. It is time to enjoy some deserved relaxation. Under COVID restrictions this doesn’t need to change, but rather be explored in new creative formats, embrace the drive and explore California. Rediscover why others love to visit our beautiful State – from beaches, mountain trails, clear desert or mountain skies, rural and diverse cities, hiking, and much more. Get out there and explore California!!

As you enjoy the last month of summer, remember our 2020 guest, COVID, has not left. Please stay safe, wear a mask, and social distance. The tired and overwhelmed healthcare workers thank you.
